Ambassador presents Letter of Credence to Governor General of Papua New Guinea

The ceremony took place with the customary pomp and circumstance with a Guard of Honour, Military band, strict choreography of the interactions with the Governor General at Government House at 10 AM, less than 24 hours after the arrival of the new HoD in country. The expediency with which the ceremony took place was definitely unique and symbolises the close and appreciative stance the current government continues to take towards the European Union and its presence in Papua New Guinea.
Following the acceptance of his Letters of Credence by the Governor General, the newly ordained EU Ambassador to Papua New Guinea delivered a statement in which he highlighted i.a. similarities between the two partners in terms of cultural diversity, the thriving and productive partnership as it exists between the EU and PNG today and the scope that offers for being event more ambitious in our engagement going forward. This could allow for making progress in key areas such as implementation of the universal Sustainable Development Goals framework, Human Rights (including eradicating Gender Based Violence and possibly the abolition of the Death Penalty), improved public finance management, promotion of renewable energy and the objective to facilitate more people to people contact contacts, e.g. through academic exchange with Erasmus+ or cultural cooperation. Ambassador Videtič also referred to the 3rd Political Dialogue between EU and PNG which took place in 2018 and the envisaged next meeting to be held in 2020.
In his response, the Governor General highlighted the already good bilateral relationship between his country and the European Union since independence in 1975. He acknowledged the continued support and important contributions of the EU to PNG's development aspirations, adding that his country would also welcome further cooperation in the areas of trade, tourism, investment and development assistance in general.
The ceremony concluded at 11 AM following an audience with the Governor General.
