EU Statement on the Impact and Consequences of the Current Situation in the Gaza Strip-Palestine in all aspects of UNESCO mandate – 224th Executive Board, UNESCO

I have the honour to speak on behalf of the European Union, and the candidate country Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Republic of Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, Ukraine and the Principality of Andorra, the Principality of Monaco, and the Republic of San Marino.

The European Union fully supports UNESCO’s Programme of Emergency Assistance for Gaza and recognises UNESCO’s invaluable contribution in the fields of education, culture, and communication and information

UNESCO’s actions and emergency assistance are crucial to addressing the catastrophic situation in Gaza. We applaud the action plan’s strong emphasis on gender-responsive approaches. 

L’Union européenne souligne que la réussite du Programme d’assistance d’urgence de l’UNESCO repose sur un accès sûr, immédiat et sans entrave à l’aide humanitaire à Gaza et sur l’ensemble de son territoire, ainsi que sur sa distribution continue à grande échelle. Elle repose également sur la capacité de l’ONU et de ses agences à travailler en toute indépendance.

L'Union européenne souligne également qu'il est essentiel que les journalistes et les professionnels des médias puissent exercer leur métier librement et en toute sécurité, et s'oppose à toute tentative visant à restreindre la liberté de la presse, notamment l'interdiction d'entrée sur le territoire et les mesures visant spécifiquement les journalistes.

Since the 7th October 2023 Hamas terrorist attack and the start of the war in Gaza, the EU and its Member States have provided €1.68 billion in humanitarian financial support to the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

The EU stands ready to contribute to Gaza’s stabilisation, transitional governance, recovery and reconstruction, in line with international law. We will continue to contribute to peace efforts and to actively engage with partners, including UNESCO, on the next steps for the full implementation by all parties of the ceasefire and all other provisions of UNSCR 2803.
