CONNECTING PERU TO THE ENERGY OF TOMORROW

Peru and the European Union are working together to accelerate the transition to green energy. Together we are investing in sustainable energy programmes that make a positive impact on people’s lives today, and tomorrow. By using the power of wind, sun and water, we give power to the people of Peru.

Meet Deivid

Hello, I'm Deivid. As a passionate skateboarder, I'm always pushing my limits to improve my style and skills. But for me, it's even more about sharing moments and experiences with people like me. It's for this collective energy, and for inspiring the up-and-coming talent that I rely on public skateparks.

These illuminated skateparks are vital for the next generation of skaters to grow and reach our full potential.

After working or studying during the day, Peruvians can come to these parks to train safely and consistently. But beyond skating, these spaces are crucial for creating safe spots where young people can gather, support each other, and build a positive community around our shared passion.

Meet Cristina

Hello, I'm Cristina, a pastry chef and the founder of Beik, a specialty coffee shop in Lima. At Beik every coffee and every pastry is made with care, precision, and consistency. From our exceptional Cajamarca coffee to my handmade desserts, delivering quality day after day is everything, and it all starts with energy we can rely on.

Reliable, clean power is essential for us to craft every coffee and pastry and to create a warm, welcoming space for everyone.

Electricity powers everything we do: espresso machines, ovens for baking and testing new recipes, and the lighting and temperature that shape the atmosphere. Beik is more than a cafe - it’s a future-proof space where craftsmanship and community continue to come together.

Global Gateway Initiative linking Peru and Chile

Linking Peru and Chile for a stronger energy future

Global Gateway flagship initiative

Supported by the European Union, the initiative aims to strengthen energy integration across the Andean region through a key electrical interconnection between Peru and Chile. The project involves linking the far south of Peru (Tacna) with the far north of Chile (Arica and Parinacota). By creating this vital connection, the project will enable cross-border electricity exchange, unlock investment opportunities for the EU private sector, and support sustainable energy development across the Andes. This will contribute to enhanced energy security and a greener energy transition for Peru and Chile in the framework of the LAC Regional Electricity Initiative.

Linking Peru and Ecuador for more reliable power

Global Gateway initiative

Backed by the European Union and private sector partners, this cross-border energy project will build a 500 kV transmission line and new substations linking Ecuador and Peru, strengthening the Andean electricity interconnection and expanding key transmission infrastructure across Peru. The interconnector will enable higher shares of renewable energy, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and improve energy efficiency and supply security for both countries. As part of the Global Gateway agenda and the LAC Regional Electricity Initiative, the project delivers concrete regional impact: more reliable power, stronger energy security, and faster progress on climate action.

    Global Gateway Initiative Amazon Basin

Protecting forests, supporting communities in the Amazon Basin

Global Gateway flagship initiative

The Amazon Basin initiative and Amazonia+ programme, supported by the European Union, helps communities across the Amazon basin face climate change while contributing to a fair energy transition. By reducing deforestation and protecting biodiversity, it safeguards forests that millions rely on for food, water, and livelihoods. The programme helps cut CO₂ emissions, strengthen communities’ resilience to floods and droughts, and promote sustainable livelihoods that reduce reliance on polluting energy sources. By preserving the Amazon - one of the world’s most vital ecosystems - the initiative helps ensure cleaner air, richer biodiversity, and a long-term energy transition for the people who depend on the Amazon today and tomorrow.

Speeding up approvals for clean energy projects

Global Gateway initiative

The European Union is providing support to SENACE, the Peruvian national environmental certification agency of the Ministry for Environment, to modernise and streamline environmental impact assessment approvals in Peru through digital tools and simpler procedures. This reduces delays and costs while keeping strong environmental safeguards in place. It enables key energy and infrastructure projects move forward faster and males Peru more attractive for responsible investment.

Global Gateway Initiative Peru cross border electricity

Laying the groundwork for reliable cross-border electricity

Global Gateway initiative

Supported by the European Union, the Andean Electricity Integration System (SINEA) helps Peru and neighbouring countries better connect and coordinate their electricity networks. This leads to more reliable power, fewer disruptions, and more efficient use of energy across borders - helping keep costs down for citizens and businesses. By aligning rules and upgrading infrastructure, the initiative also supports renewable energy, regional cooperation, and long-term climate and growth goals.

Boosting cross-border energy opportunities

Global Gateway initiative

The European Union provides support to the Regional Energy Integration Commission (CIER) to strengthen cooperation and integration across Latin America’s electricity markets. CIER helps countries align rules, promote cross-border electricity trade, and share best practices. This creates a more reliable and competitive regional power market, opens new business opportunities, and makes it easier for companies, especially in renewable energy, to invest and operate across borders.
