The project aims to reduce the social and economic vulnerabilities of women fishers in Siargao Island by promoting Women-managed Areas, Women-led Enterprises,, and ensuring proactive women’s participation in the management and consultative bodies.

• Organizing and strengthening of Women Self-help Groups
• Women-led marine and coastal habitat assessment and monitoring;
• Promotion of Women-managed Areas;
• Education campaign for sustainable fisheries and environmental protection;
• Capacity-building on environmental management, enterprise management, and influencing for women;

Sustainability of the Project

Women-Managed Areas (WMA)- The WMAs will be co-managed by Women Self-help (SHeG) Groups through a stewardship agreement either by the village and/or municipal LGU. The trained women fishers will conduct annual habitat monitoring to determine the resource management effectiveness. The SHeGs will also develop an annual action plan including adaptive management strategies for the WMAs. Funding support for the WMAs can be sourced from the Municipal Coastal Resource Management Fund, Disaster Risk Reduction Fund, and SHG savings and income.

Women-led Enterprises- the various livelihood initiatives will generate income that will pay for the workers, scaling-up of the business and partly contribute to the SHeGs operations. The project-

supported enterprises can also be used as a leverage to access financial and technical support from the government and other Civil Society Organizations.

Self-help Groups-The SHeGs will have their own resource generation activities through membership fees and other income sources that will be agreed upon. These organizations will be accredited to any government agencies to access support and participate in any management and/or consultative bodies.
