The Delegation of the European Union to the Philippines issues the following statement:

The EU Delegation to the Philippines expresses deep concern over the tragic killing of radio broadcaster Erwin "Boy Pana” Segovia, who was shot dead in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur on Monday 21 July.

This follows the murder of veteran columnist Juan “Johnny” Dayang on 29 April 2025 and of trans rights activist and former journalist Ali Macalintal on 23 June 2025.

The protection of journalists, the safeguarding of a free and independent media, the freedom of expression of civil society are fundamental pillars of a democratic society that upholds the rule of law and respects human rights.

We welcome the swift initiating of investigations into all abovementioned incidents by the Presidential Task Force on Media Security and the Philippine National Police. We call for a prompt, thorough, and transparent action that ensures those responsible are held accountable.
