EU Ambassador Markus Ederer and Heads of EU Member States Diplomatic Missions visited 'Kurchatov Institute' Research Centre

The programme of the visit included a tour of the research, scientific and technological facilities of the Centre, such as the Tokamak-15MD thermonuclear facility (currently under construction), several resource centres of the Kurchatov Complex of NBICS [centre of nano- bio-, info-, cognitive and socio-humanistic sciences and technologies] Nature - Like Technologies, the Kurchatov Synchrotron Neutron Research Complex, and others.
At a meeting with the management of the Institute, Ambassador Ederer noted that the high status and eminent role of the Kurchatov Institute in the Russian research landscape makes it one of the most important institutional partners in Russia for science & technology cooperation with Europe. He also recognised that the Institute has for many years been an active participant of the European Union's Framework Programmes for research. In particular, its participation in the new large research infrastructure project CREMLINplus supported under the EU's Horizon 2020 programme was highlighted. The contribution of the Kurchatov Institute into the development of large research facilities located in Europe, such as the X‐ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL), Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR), and International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) was also recognised.
Horizon 2020 CREMLINplus Project
The Horizon 2020 CREMLINplus project is a four-year project (2020-2023) aimed at strengthening European-Russian scientific and technical collaboration in the field of research infrastructures. It brings together 35 European and Russian participants – strong players in the domain of research infrastructures. The objectives of the project include the development and delivery of the finest, novel cutting-edge technologies for both the Russian megascience projects and their European counterparts, and preparing a defined set of Russian research infrastructures for not only Russian but also European and international access and utilisation.
