The Delegation of the European Union to Russia and the ECOCUP Film Festival inaugurate the first ECOCUP Green Talks Online that will be broadcasted on colta.ru from 21 to 24 May 2020. The event is organized with the support of the Heinrich Böll Foundation in Russia.

The online festival will feature screenings of four green documentaries from France, Germany, and Spain followed by Q&A session with filmmakers, and complemented by discussions and exchanges on environment and climate issues with participation of experts and activists from the EU and Russia.

The Festival ECOCUP Green Talks Online will focus on the need to develop new green policies for the world to be successful in its fight against climate change and environmental degradation that pose an existential threat to all, including the EU and Russia. With 94% of its citizens considering the protection of the environment and climate crucial, the European Union has set the ambition of becoming the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. The European Green Deal, adopted in December 2019, is EU’s roadmap to reaching this objective, while enhancing growth, providing new and better jobs and improving people’s well-being and making a green and inclusive transition towards a healthy planet for generations to come.

The first day of the Festival will open with a discussion on the European green deal and its implications for Russia, with the participation of Cyril Loisel, Climate Diplomacy officer, European Commission’s Directorate-General for Climate Action. The screening of the French documentary about young eco-activists ‘Generation Greta’ will follow. The film tells us about nine young female activists who are united by the same struggle: raising awareness about the climate emergency and fighting against the inaction of politicians.

On 22 May, the festival will offer the other French film “Food for Change”, explaining how each of us can become a force for change and develop recipes for an economically viable dietary transition, and a discussion on challenges the world is facing on its path to the post-fossil fuel era.

On 23 May, the Spanish documentary "Megafires" will provide insights into how forest fires change the face of the planet and lives of people and how to deal with them efficiently. While EU and Russian experts will discuss the issue of forest fires and their consequences on 24 May, the discussion on 23 May will focus on debunking myths about plastic.

Finally, on 24 May, the ECOCUP Green Talks Online will present the German film “Rewilding - A New Paradigm for Nature Conservation”. It profiles the wildlife resurgence that is happening on European doorsteps, and answers to the question to what extend we can return complexity and richness to degraded European ecosystems.
