We are

The European Union (EU) is an economic and political partnership between 27 European countries. It plays an important role in international affairs through diplomacy, trade, development aid and working with global organisations. Abroad, the EU is represented through more than 140 diplomatic representations, known also as EU Delegations, which have a similar function to those of an embassy.

The EU Delegation to Sierra Leone manages cooperation projects in the priority areas of infrastructure, governance, macro-economic support and rural development. We offer

We offer a post of Driver at the Administration Section. Under this post, the recruited person will be attributed functions depending on the needs of the Delegation. Upon recruitment, the successful candidate will occupy a specific job function as Driver – this job function may be changed in accordance with the needs of the Delegation. Under this job function the successful candidate will:

  • Drive carefully and safely at all times in line with international driving standards, and checks to ensure that passengers, other road users and the vehicle in his care are safe;
  • Ensure compliance with local administrative procedures and SOPs required in the event of an accident;
  • Maintain a valid driving licence during the duration of the contract;
  • Drive staff to meetings, up country missions and regional missions;
  • Carry out mail delivery/ collection of quotations and supplies as requested;
  • On instructions from the officers concerned, undertake any action resulting from driving tasks;
  • Check assigned vehicle/s on a daily basis and promptly report to the Head of Administration of any faults and/or maintenance needs;
  • Schedule regular car service appointments;
  • Ensure that the vehicle is always at least half tank full;
  • Report fuel requirements, purchase fuel and update the vehicle log book accordingly;
  • Log official trips, daily mileage, fuel consumption, oil changes, greasing, etc., maintain all the required documents/supplies up to date; including vehicle insurance, license, registration, logs, office directory, first aid kit, and necessary spare parts in the assigned vehicle;
  • Ensure the vehicle is clean outside and inside and seats are clean and comfortable for all riders;
  • Maintain a professional appearance by ensuring good personal hygiene, and wears a clean uniform at all times;
  • Ensure that adequate knowledge of the destination and route is gathered before departure;
  • Listen to traffic and weather reports to stay up-to-date on road conditions and adjust the route to avoid heavy traffic or road constructions, as needed;
  • Keep abreast of traffic rules and regulations as well as road security and safety awareness to enable safe on time arrival for meetings;
  • Establishes good and considerate working relationships with all staff in the organisation, demonstrating respect for their own roles and responsibilities;
  • Be available outside standard hours in case of emergency and during missions;
  • Check and complete the drivers application tool for assignments;
  • Fill in MIPS application in case of missions;
  • Back up to other drivers;
  • Take on additional tasks as required in the interest of the service.

He/she will be working within an office of 19 expatriates and 26 local staff.

Official working hours are 37.5 hours per week.

Office location is at Leicester Peak in Freetown.

The basic salary is group 5 starting at SLL 4,859,636 per month.

In addition, we pay other allowances, which include leave, rent and transport.

Selection Criteria

Minimum Requirements:

  1. Successful completion of secondary education, attested by a valid high school diploma
  2. Valid driver's license and;
  3. Minimum 5 years’ experience in driving 4-wheel-drive vehicles; of which at least 2 years working for International Organizations, NGOs or Diplomatic Missions;
  4. Very good written and oral command of English; and good computer skills (Word, Excel);
  5. Medically fit to perform the required duties;
  6. Enjoys civil rights and permits for employment under local law;
  7. Discretion and impeccable ethical standards; excellent organisation skills.

The following will be considered an asset:

  1. Additional professional training in driving skills/duties;
  2. Demonstrated basic knowledge of Vehicle Maintenance

The procedure

After the deadline for applications, the applications will be reviewed by a Selection Committee set up for this purpose. The Selection Committee will prepare a short-list of candidates who are considered to be the most suitable for the post on the basis of a preliminary assessment of the information provided in their application letter and the supporting documents. The short-listed candidates will be invited to an assessment phase which will include a written test, driving test and an interview during this phase, the Selection Committee will assess the suitability of the candidates for the post.

The candidates who have not been short-listed will not be contacted individually; however, the Delegation will use the same means of publication as for this Vacancy Notice to inform the remaining candidates once the recruitment procedure has been completed and that a candidate has (or has not) been recruited.
