The Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Korea, together with the 25 EU Member States in Korea, hosted a major event to mark Europe Day 2025 under the theme “Partnering for Peace and Security.” The gathering brought together over 700 guests, including diplomats, Korean government officials, business leaders, scholars, and civil society representatives, highlighting the importance of the EU-Korea partnership in a time of global uncertainty. This year’s event carried particular significance as it commemorated the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, which laid the foundation for European integration. In her remarks, EU Ambassador to Korea H.E. Maria Castillo Fernandez reflected on the EU’s origins as a peace project and reaffirmed its commitment to multilateral cooperation and democratic values. She also underlined the EU’s enduring support for Ukraine, stating, “The EU will continue to support Ukraine in order to defend itself and to integrate the EU as a free, independent and democratic country”. Former Acting President Han Duck-soo also attended the reception as a distinguished guest, highlighting the growing importance of EU-RoK cooperation and expressing his appreciation for Ambassador Maria Castillo Fernandez’s dedication and leadership in strengthening bilateral ties over the past 5 years.

지난 5월 9일, 주한 유럽연합대표부와 주한 EU 25개 회원국은 “평화와 안보를 위한 동반자”라는 주제로 2025년 유럽의 날 기념 행사를 개최했습니다. 본 행사는 각국 외교단, 한국 정부 관계자, 기업인, 학계, 시민사회 인사 등 700명 이상이 참석해 불확실성이 커져가는 국제 정세 속에서 EU-한국 간 파트너십의 중요성을 재확인하는 시간이 였습니다. 올해는 특히 유럽 통합의 출발점인 슈만 선언 75주년을 기념하며 더욱 뜻깊게 진행되었다. 마리아 카스티요 페르난데즈(Maria Castillo Fernandez) 주한 EU 대사는 개회사에서 EU의 출범이 ‘평화를 위한 프로젝트’였음을 상기시키며, 다자 협력과 민주적 가치에 대한 지속적인 헌신을 강조했습다. 또한 “EU는 우크라이나가 자유롭고 독립적이며 민주적인 국가로서 EU에 통합될 수 있도록 계속 지원할 것”이라고 밝혀 우크라이나에 대한 변함없는 지지를 재확인했다. 이날 행사에는 한덕수 전 국무총리도 귀빈으로 참석해, 지난 5년간 양국 관계 강화를 위해 힘써온 대사에게 감사를 전하며 EU-한국 간 협력의 중요성이 더욱 커지고 있다고 언급했습니다.
