This year's celebration transcended the conventional diplomatic gathering, drawing together an impressive confluence of voices: ministers, diplomats, UN representatives, implementing partners, academia, media, human rights defenders, influencers, cultural workers and countless other friends of the Union, all united in honouring the principles of peace, cooperation, and multilateralism that continue to shape EU policy.
A Week of Celebration
The European Union's week-long commemoration of Europe Day showcased its continued engagement with the Republic of South Sudan through various events. The festivities began on 04 May with a press conference, and a public lecture themed: EU in today’s world at University of Juba, both led by Ambassador Pelle Enarsson.

Juba University
The following day, Tuesday, 05 May, highlighted two concurrent events: an innovative speed-dating session themed "Meet an EU Official," which offered South Sudanese citizens a unique opportunity for direct engagement with EU representatives; and the launch of the European Cinema Days (ECDs) screening at the University of Juba. The ECDs continued throughout the week—from 05-07 May at the Unipod of the University of Juba, presented collaboratively by the Embassies of France, Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
Additionally, a trade fair at Konyo-Konyo Market showcased EU-funded development projects under the GRACE Programme, while a book launch on constitutional making, supported by the Max Planck Institute and the EU, underscored the EU's commitment to strengthening the future governance in South Sudan.
Distinguished Attendees and Political Leadership
Despite the heavy rainfall that affected the capital earlier in the day, the gathering attracted prominent figures, including Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Hon. Akuei Bona Malwal, Minister for Youth and Sports Hon. Atong Kuol Manyang, Minister for Culture, Museums, and National Heritage Hon. Sarah Nyanath, and Deputy Minister of Finance Hon. Thok Turuk Thok. EU member state ambassadors including Paul Tholen of the Netherlands and Gregory Beldjian of Germany, along with representatives from other foreign missions, were also present. The event was further enriched by influential voices from civil society organizations, such as the Youth Empowerment Programme and the Christian Agency for Peace and Development. This diverse representation underscored the inclusive and multisectoral nature of the gathering.

Ambassador Pelle Enarsson's Vision for Peace and Democracy
In his keynote address, Ambassador Enarsson affirmed the European Union's steadfast commitment to advancing peace, catalysing social transformation, and supporting free and credible elections that will empower South Sudanese citizens to chart the nation's democratic future, making allegories to the peace project that has formed the European Union. “South Sudan is at a precarious moment. There is a strong need for visionary leadership to bring the people of South Sudan together. You need to find your coal and steel. When you do, we will be here to support your peace and help South Sudan's people become prosperous as we have done in the past and continue to do now,” Amb. Enarsson said.
“South Sudan needs peace and a transition to democracy through credible elections. South Sudan needs peace for development. The EU has been supporting the institutions of the peace agreement, the election preparations, the work on a new constitution, civic education, human rights activists, and youth peace ambassadors. In all this work, we coordinate closely with the African Union, IGAD, and the neighbouring countries.”
A Celebration Centered on Connection and Community
The Delegation deliberately designed a streamlined formal program, recognizing that the true spirit of Europe Day lay in fostering genuine human connection. The ceremony opened with the anthems of the Republic of South Sudan and the European Union, followed by remarks from the Ambassador, musical performances and dances and photo exhibition. Rather than prolonging formal proceedings, the delegation allocated most of the event to informal engagement, enabling attendees to interact freely, socialize meaningfully, and celebrate together through music, dance, and a photo exhibition. Guests enjoyed the captivating performances by musician Emmanuel Kembe. The presence of a DJ further elevated the celebratory atmosphere, ensuring an evening brimming with music, laughter, and dancing until 8 PM. Attendees expressed appreciation for the event's emphasis on relationship-building and mutual engagement rather than formal protocol.
