Threads on Threads: an Exhibition and Conference on Textiles in Sri Lanka, South Asia and Europe
An initiative of the EU Living Heritage Series, Threads on Threads consists of two events: an exhibition and a conference about textile heritage in Sri Lanka, South Asia and Europe.
It is organised by the Threads of History Museum and Lanka Decorative Arts with the support of the Delegation of the European Union to Sri Lanka and the Maldives.
These events aim to promote and sustain the living heritage of these regions.
Exhibition, 9-22 July 2022
This exhibition is about Somanas and Chintz textiles, their making and their trade. Exhibits consist of 19th and 20th century fabrics made in Sri Lanka and India as well as European cotton textiles made for the Sri Lankan market. This exhibition strives to tell this story with textiles, text panels and high-resolution image panels.
The two-week exhibition from the 9th to 22nd of July 2022 will be showcased at Barefoot Gallery, 704 Galle Road, Colombo 3, with free entrance.
International Conference, POSTPONED
Art historians, historians, ethnologists, museum curators, designers from Sri Lanka, Europe and South Asia will debate and discuss history of textiles, their preservation, links and influences, contemporary craftsmanship and the challenges of modern entrepreneurship.
The conference will take place in the second half of 2022 . It will be a free event.
