Development of Winter Tourism Corridor in Erzurum, Erzincan and Kars
The Winter Tourism Corridor in Erzurum, Erzincan, and Kars Project aims to establish a well-organised infrastructure for the regional tourism sector, supported by a strong network and the necessary institutional arrangements. The project primarily focuses on improving the physical infrastructure of these three centres while also encompassing the construction of superstructure facilities. Additionally, capacity-building efforts are being carried out to support destination management and the promotion of the Winter Tourism Corridor.
Destination Management Centres have been established as part the project. These centres inform tourists, tour operators and travel agencies regarding tourism routes and options in the region. Moreover, the centres are also structured to offer public relations and consultancy services for investors and entrepreneurs on the concept of winter tourism and winter tourism opportunities. This initiative has helped increase investment opportunities in the sector and position the region as centre of attraction.
Supported by governorates, municipalities, development agencies, infrastructure associations, civil society organisations and relevant professional bodies, the project aims to enhance winter tourism and carry out marketing, publicity, branding and promotion activities, thereby increasing the number of tourists visiting. Through these efforts, the project aims to create employment opportunities, enhance competitiveness, and contribute to the economic development of the three provinces.
The Tourism Strategy of Türkiye 2023 envisions diversifying the tourism sector and extending tourism activities throughout the year by adapting natural and cultural assets to meet different tourism demands. With this goal in mind, the idea of creating ‘tourism corridors’ was introduced. This approach, which is new to Türkiye, takes into account the increasing competition in the tourism sector. Rather than focusing on areas offering a single tourism activity, the strategy aims to create routes that provide visitors with a variety of experiences within a specific corridor. These include historical, architectural, and natural attractions, as well as sports activities and local products.
