The European Union launched a project in Ankara on 14 October in order to make judicial cooperation between Turkey and the member states of the European Union more effective and faster in criminal matters.

The European Union launched a project in Ankara on 14 October in order to make judicial cooperation between Turkey and the member states of the European Union more effective and faster in criminal matters. Minister of Justice Abdülhamit Gül, Director of Information Society and Combating Crime at the Council of Europe, Jan Kleijssen, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Director for EU Affairs Faruk Kaymakcı and Head of EU Delegation to Turkey Ambassador Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut attended the opening ceremony.

The project, implemented with the EU contribution of 2.7 million Euros, aims to strengthen international judicial cooperation in criminal matters between Turkey and EU member states on the basis of the Council of Europe and United Nations conventions and bilateral protocols.

Within the scope of the project, it will be evaluated whether the law is compatible with the latest developments in international standards. In addition, training of judges and prosecutors will be provided in order to increase the quality of incoming and forwarded requests regarding international cooperation.

The intense demand for international cooperation has significantly increased the responsibility and workload of the Central Authority under the Ministry of Justice. Within the scope of this project, a central monitoring system will be established to ensure that the Ministry has up-to-date information on incoming and forwarded requests, enabling it to identify and make the necessary changes in a timely manner.

Finally, the project will aim to strengthen links for international cooperation between the Turkish authorities and various communication networks, enabling Turkish judges, prosecutors and Central Authority representatives to network and share their experiences with their colleagues in EU Member States.

The project will be implemented by the Council of Europe.
