EU-Türkiye Cultural Heritage Exhibition Opens

Don’t miss the digital photography exhibition ‘The Common Heritage We Build & Share’, which will be inaugurated at CerModern on Europe Day, 9 of May! It will be open to public from Friday 10 of May until Sunday 12 of May.

The digital exhibition, prepared by the Delegation of the European Union to Türkiye, focuses on the common heritage and features pictures from cultural heritage preservation projects supported by the European Union.

Encouraging citizens of Ankara to come and enjoy the exhibition, the Head of the EU Delegation to Türkiye Ambassador Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut stated:

This remarkable exhibition features photographs of projects carried out by the EU and Türkiye and showcases our long-standing cooperation in preserving and protecting common cultural heritage. Visitors will be able to immerse themselves into magic landscapes and architecture of Türkiye. I hope that you will experience many positive emotions and appreciate even more our common effort at cherishing, protecting and celebrating our shared cultural heritage. It is a gift we preserve for future generations − a legacy that bridges time and space.”

Here are some of the photographs:

The Revitalisation of the Tourism Sector in Adıyaman project aims to develop the tourism potential of the city of Adıyaman and the Adıyaman province which boast the world-famous Mount Nemrut National Park and is the site of the historical Kingdom of Commagene.

The Kendirli Church and Latin School, built in 1860 in Gaziantep, restored as the headquarters of the Turkish Archaeology and Cultural Heritage Institute with the support of the EU. The Institute will provide accessibility to Ancient Anatolian civilizations’ archaeological and historical heritage works by collecting, preserving and promoting shared values and common cultural heritage. By establishing networks with its peers in the EU, the Institute will enable exchange of knowledge and knowhow on latest research, technologies, governance models and sustainable archaeological practices.

The project ‘Revealing the Tourist Values of Van’ focused on history, culture and natural attractions, and produced information and a film to facilitate tourism.

The ‘Cultural Wealth of Izmir - Sustaining Jewish Heritage’ project has played an important role in preserving the cultural sites within the Kemeraltı neighborhood. Central to its mission was the development of a strategic master plan to revitalize the Havra District, coupled with Restoration Plans for the Hevra and Foresteros Synagogues.

Dating back to the 17th century, the Jewish Old Quarter comprises six interconnected synagogues. This architectural compound stands as a testament to İzmir's rich multicultural heritage and it is a tribute to Turkish history and world monuments.

The ‘Dialogue for Change through Culture and Art’ project, which goes by the short name Elele (Hand in Hand), aimed to increase intercultural and interreligious dialogue among young men and women by organising culture and art events in five cities of Erzincan, Mardin, Malatya, Diyarbakır, and Gaziantep. The action empowered smaller civil society organisations working in the field of culture by providing them with funding.

‘The Development of Winter Tourism Corridor in Erzurum, Erzincan, and Kars’ project focussed on infrastructure for the regional tourism sector.

The five-year project employed the most modern research methods to identify the natural values of the Kaçkar Mountains. It also helped local people to increase their income.

The historic sites, streets, and buildings of the city were renovated through ‘The Revitalisation of History in Şanlıurfa’ project. Existing buildings benefitted from more functional environmental planning. It involved protecting Göbeklitepe’s archaeological excavation area, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Cultural Heritage Development Programme in the GAP Region contributed to the region’s socio-economic growth by protecting historical and cultural heritage, developing cultural tourism in the region, and supporting agro and cultural tourism projects.

Funded through the ‘Common Cultural Heritage’ programme, the ‘Heritage Alive’ project aimed to sustain, promote, and enhance understanding of the cultural legacy of the Smyrna Agora Ancient City site. Led by the Our City of Izmir Association in collaboration with the Santagata Foundation, this initiative aimed to expand visitor engagement, raise awareness, and develop new tools for interpreting the heritage.

The ‘The Mardin Sustainable Tourism’ project strengthened tourism infrastructure; several historical buildings were renovated and training was provided. For Mardin, the project was a step to winning a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
