Inspiring Positive Change: University students discuss Gender Equality in Ankara

05/12/2018

In the wake of the International Day for Eliminating Violence against women and ahead of the International Human Rights Day, Minister Counsellor Simona Gatti, Head of Cooperation at the EU Delegation to Turkey, together with Ankara University Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Sibel Ayşıl Özkan, will attend a panel to discuss gender equality as a human right with university students and expert speakers on 5 December 2018 at Ankara University's Centre for European Studies (ATAUM).

Women’s rights are inherent part of the fundamental rights enshrined 70 years ago by the United Nations for every human being. These rights include the right to live free from violence, slavery, and discrimination; to be educated; to own property; to vote; and to earn a fair and equal wage. Yet almost everywhere around the world, women and girls are still denied them, often simply because of their gender.

This rationale will be the baseline of the interactive discussion to be attended by students from Ankara University, as well as several expert speakers: Dr. Sabine Freizer- UN Women; Prof. Dr. Serpil Sancar, Prof. Dr. Gülriz Uygur and Assoc. Dr. Emel Memiş Parmaksız, of Ankara University; as well as Arzu Alibaz, Nestle Professional Country Director; and Deniz Zeyrek, journalist.

Participants will also have the chance to visit an exhibition of awarded photos produced under the EU funded "Support to the local Human Rights Boards in Turkey and Women Rights" project.

The event is organised by the EU Information Center in Ankara in partnership with ATAUM as part of EU’s campaign to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
