Regional Media Innovation Lab “STORYCRAFT 2020 – Innovate. Play. Engage”

EU project Lab will provide a creative space and opportunity to develop concepts for collaborative cross-border content-based initiatives that promote peace and stability in Central Asia.

On June 8-12, 2020, Internews will hold Regional Media Innovation Lab “STORYCRAFT 2020 – Innovate. Play. Engage” (Innovation Lab or Lab). The Lab will provide a creative space and opportunity to develop concepts for collaborative cross-border content-based initiatives that promote peace and stability in Central Asia. Internews will host the Lab on online platform Zoom with live broadcasting of masterclasses on “Three dots” Facebook account.

Over five days of the Lab, twelve teams of 60 media professionals and civic activists will come together and consolidate their efforts to tune up and upgrade their projects using the expertise of invited unparalleled experts in storytelling, gamification, and multimedia content production. The Lab participants will also have an opportunity to advance their knowledge of reporting on conflict sensitive issues including prevention of violent extremism (PVE). At the end of the Lab an independent jury will single out four most relevant, feasible and innovative media projects that will receive sub-grants of up to 20,000 EUR per project.

The following open masterclasses will be broadcasted on “Three dots”:

June 8, Monday

  • 11:30 – 12:30 (Bishkek time) “How to tell story using gamification approach” by Sergey Gimelreikh.
  • 12:45 – 13:45 (Bishkek time) “Visual empathy. Why telling stories in pictures?” by Polina Plavinskaya.

June 9, Tuesday

  • 11:30 – 12:30 (Bishkek time) “Storytelling: story construction principles” by Ivan Pechishev.
  • 12:45 – 14:00 (Bishkek time) “Dramaturgy and producing digital narrative projects” by Anton Utkin.

June 10, Wednesday

  • 11:30 – 12:30 (Bishkek time) “Smart social media feeds. How social media algorithms work” by Elnara Petrova.
  • 12:45 – 13:45 (Bishkek time) “From a creative idea to a business model: what one should know to start earning money in media” by Mariya Gorohova.

Regional Media Innovation Lab is organised within “Strengthening resilience to radicalisation and disinformation in Central Asia” project financed by the European Union and implemented by Internews. The project is focused on strengthening the resilience of citizens to radicalisation narratives and disinformation leading to violent extremism through support to media, civil society organisations, government institutions, religious leaders and active citizens in Central Asia.
