Increased Democratic and Inclusive Elections in Tanzania

The project aims to contribute to strengthened Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) for enhanced democratic and inclusive electoral processes and more accountable leadership in Tanzania during and after the 2020 general elections

 

ACTIVITIES

  • Pre-Elections: Training of trainers to conduct Civic Education; Facilitate civic educators to undertake awareness campaigns; engage political parties to promote women and youth positions; engage and work with women wings from different political parties to support aspirants and incumbent women; monitor inclusivity & transparency campaigns and voters registration; support weekly radio talk shows; produce TV/radio spot to promote women and youth inclusion.
  • During Elections: Support domestic election observation for accredited CSOs; support reporting of cases of GBV or unfair practices.
  • Post-Elections: Continue civic education; facilitate review forums with electoral stakeholders; hold community level mediation/peace forums including competing candidates and community groups; hold a reflection workshop with elected leaders especially women & youth; roll out a mentorship programme for the newly elected women and youth; empower the local communities to demand accountability from the elected leaders; conduct quarterly community conversations including elected leaders in the three regions to promote good governance.

 

EXPECTED RESULTS/IMPACT

  • Increased awareness of citizens on their civic rights in elections.
  • Strengthening at least 13 community-based groups to drive citizens participation and transparency in the electoral process.
  • 13 Multi-stakeholder watchdog groups and individual observers in place for monitoring nominations, campaign and electoral processes to ensure they are peaceful and democratic.
