The Tyrant Father is a comedy that sets out, in a good-humoured way, to reveal what it means to be Portuguese — both in 1941 and in 2022. This remake follows a theatre company and a web of love, misunderstandings, and mistaken identities. Chico is in love with Tatão, who is being courted by Artur. Grace loves Chico, unaware that his heart belongs to Tatão. Meanwhile, Santana writes a play for the Grandelinhas Theatre Club that becomes the script for Chico’s romantic scheme, helping him convince Tatão that he is a wealthy Count. When the play is staged, events spiral out of control and they all end up in prison.
In this 2022 version of The Tyrant Father, the story is reimagined with humour, futuristic touches, vibrant images of Lisbon and Portugal, and joyful music. In challenging times, it offers an essential celebration of identity and a hopeful reaffirmation of confidence in ourselves and in our country.
