EU Supports Civil Society partners Holding a Showcase and Dialogue Event ‘Show Respect, Create Space for Everyone!’

Plan International Timor-Leste, together with five civil society partners, hosted a Showcase and Dialogue event at Fundação Oriente in Dili with the theme: ‘Show Respect, Create Space for Everyone!’ Through this initiative, the organisations seek to advocate in favour of equality for, and inclusion of, persons with disabilities and the LGBTIQ+ community.

Plan’s partners in this event are Arcoiris Timor-Leste (ATL), Asosiasaun HAK Associação Halibur Defisiénsia Matan Timor-Leste (AHDMTL), Associação Naroman ba Futuru (ANbF), and the Community Based Rehabilitation Network Timor-Leste (CBRN-TL). The activity is funded with financial support from the European Union (EU).

By bringing together government representatives, youth, media, and civil society, the event encourages dialogue focused on rights, diversity, and equality. It aims to amplify the voices of marginalized communities, supporting advocacy efforts and increasing visibility for underrepresented groups.

Attendees explored exhibitions featuring handicrafts, coffee, agriculture, and local businesses created by project beneficiaries, showing the community’s economic progress. Video testimonials from persons with disabilities and LGBTIQ+ individuals shared stories of transformation and resilience, illustrating changes driven by the project.

The event concluded with a public dialogue involving local government officials, civil society organizations, and traditional leaders, creating spaces where people can share experiences and work together toward greater inclusion and equality. This Showcase and Dialogue event provides a platform to present the results and impact of the social inclusion project in Timor-Leste.

This event also displayed the impact of an EU-funded project implemented by CSOs over the past 30 months across 12 sucos in Dili, Ainaro, and Ermera. The project has empowered persons with disabilities (PwD) and the LGBTQI+ community, especially young women in all their diversity, to take action and exercise leadership in fully realizing their human rights, with a particular focus on social and economic rights.

Plan International Timor-Leste and its partners remain committed to building a Timor-Leste that is inclusive, safe, and respectful of all people—regardless of identity, gender, or ability.
