EU Supports Dili International Marathon 2026: Running for Our Forests and Wildlife
Held under the theme “Run for Our Forest and Wildlife – Hadomi Ita Nia Floresta no Balada Fuik” (Love Our Forests and Wildlife), the 2026 edition brought together participants from across Timor-Leste and beyond.
His Excellency Dr. José Ramos-Horta, President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, expressed his appreciation to all supporters of the Dili International Marathon and recognised the contribution of the European Union as a Gold Supporter of the event.
Speaking at the event, H.E. Thorsten Bargfrede, Ambassador of the European Union to Timor-Leste, reaffirmed the EU’s strong support for the Dili International Marathon 2026 and highlighted the EU’s commitment to supporting Timor-Leste in agroforestry, forest restoration and wildlife conservation.

He underlined the EU’s broader vision for Timor-Leste’s forests and wildlife, including support for ambitious efforts to plant one million trees every year, while strengthening sustainable approaches to forestry and agroforestry.
The Ambassador also emphasised that the Dili International Marathon represents more than a sporting competition.
“But the Dili Marathon is not only about forests and wildlife,” he added. “It represents a lot of spirit. It is about community, participation and giving your best shots.”
The Ambassador also took part personally in the race, joining the half-marathon alongside members of the EU team.
With a smile, he reflected on his own experience: “I felt that, as a representative of the EU, I needed to contribute myself. To my surprise, I was only about ten minutes behind the winner of the women’s full marathon category, although, of course, she ran twice the distance!”
The EU’s participation in DIM 2026 reflects its broader partnership with Timor-Leste in promoting sustainable development, environmental protection, skills development and opportunities for young people, while celebrating the power of sport to bring communities together.
