Team Europe: Timor-Leste receives the first batch of COVID-19 vaccine through the COVAX Facility

On 5 April 2021, Timor-Leste’s first vaccines against COVID-19 arrived in Dili: 24,000 doses provided under the COVAX facility. These doses are the first of several COVAX deliveries that altogether will allow for the vaccination of 20% of the Timorese population.

Team Europe is proud to contribute to the COVAX facility, helping to provide for affordable and fair access to vaccines for Timorese people, in partnership with the World Health Organisation (WHO), the GAVI global initiative, UNICEF and other partners. Making sure everyone has access to safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines is a top priority of the European Union. In the fight against the global COVID-19 pandemic nobody is safe until everyone is safe.
The European Union’s assistance does not stop at transporting vaccines. Deliveries are an important first step, but they would be useless in countries without sufficient capacity within their national health systems to implement vaccination campaigns.
This is why on 18 January, the European Union in Timor-Leste made available nearly USD 2.4 million (EURO 2 million) to WHO Timor-Leste to support its work with the Ministry of Health to mitigate the health impacts of communicable diseases – particularly of COVID-19 – and to contribute to building strong, effective and resilient health systems in Timor-Leste. Since April 2020, the total value of Team Europe support for Timor-Leste’s Covid-19 response has amounted to more than USD 5 million.
The European Union Ambassador Andrew Jacobs said: “I am delighted that today we have the first delivery of COVAX vaccines to Dili, Timor-Leste. The COVAX Facility is a great illustration of global solidarity. This is real multilateralism in action. The European Union is proud to join the Government of Timor-Leste, the WHO, UNICEF, and many other contributors to make this happen. I pay tribute to the frontline health workers and to all those in Timor-Leste who work tirelessly in the battle against COVID-19. Team Europe will continue to stand by the people of Timor-Leste”.
The COVAX facility is a multilateral initiative to which Team Europe - the European Union, its Member States and the European Investment Bank - is contributing over EUR 2.2 billion (USD 2.6 billion) to ensure the achievement of the COVAX supply of 1.3 billion vaccines to 92 low and middle-income countries, including Timor-Leste.
