Sultan Özer

Sultan Özer was born in Yıldızeli, Sivas, in 1965. She completed her primary, middle and high school education in Ankara and graduated from Ankara University’s School of Press and Broadcasting, now the Faculty of Communication. She began her journalism career in 1987 at Haftaya Bakış/Yankı Bakış magazine.

She later worked as a civil servant at the Seğmenler Tax Office of the Ankara Revenue Office before resigning from public service and returning to journalism. She returned to journalism at Gerçek magazine in September 1993 and later continued at the Ankara bureau of Evrensel, which began publication on 7 June 1995. At Evrensel, she worked as a correspondent covering labour, the judiciary, the Prime Ministry and Parliament, and also served as the newspaper’s Ankara Representative.

At the same time, she produced the Ankara programme Sıfıraltı for Hayat TV, later renamed Hayatın Sesi. From early 2016, she worked at Hayatın Sesi TV as both an editor and parliamentary correspondent while continuing to produce Sıfıraltı. She remained in these roles until Hayatın Sesi TV was closed down by a decree-law in September 2016.

In 2017, she helped establish halagazeteciyiz.net, where she worked as an editor and contributed articles. She also continued to work as an editor and writer for Medyaport.net. She currently writes a column for Evrensel.

From 2018 to 2022, she served as Secretary General of the Kızılırmak Federation of Local Associations. She has also held executive positions at the Journalists’ Union of Türkiye (TGS) and the Association of Economy Reporters. She is a member of the Parliamentary Correspondents’ Association, the Journalists’ Association, the Turkish Journalists’ Association, the Contemporary Journalists’ Association and İHD.

Together with Serpil Çelenk Güvenç, she co-authored two books: Denizlerin Şekibe Ablası-Şekibe Çelenk, about lawyer Şekibe Çelenk, wife of Halit Çelenk, who was the lawyer and friend of Deniz Gezmiş and his companions, and Filistin Kartalları.

She has also contributed articles and interviews to Yaşamda ve Yargıda Devrimci Duruş Halit Çelenk, Geleceğe Adanmış Bir Ömür Halit Çelenk, a catalogue published to mark anniversaries of İlhan Erdost’s death, and the magazines Evrensel Kültür, Ekonom and Kırık Saat.

She is currently a member of the Selection Committee of the Journalists’ Association and works at 24 Saat, the Association’s newspaper.

The strongest corrections here are “gave his first international performance”, “shared leading roles”, the SİYAD institutional-name issue and several overly literal biographical constructions. The revised version reads much more like native, professional British English while staying close to the Turkish source.
