World Press Freedom Day: Public debate discusses journalists' neutrality and political engagement
On May 31, 2023, the European Union Delegation to Uganda collaborated with the Media Challenge Initiative, a Ugandan youth non for profit building the next generation of journalists in Africa, to organise a thought provoking public debate to mark World Press Freedom Day 2023.
Celebrated every May 3, this year’s occasion was important as it marked the 30th anniversary since the proclamation in 1993 by the UN General Assembly of World Press Freedom Day. The public debate brought together influential voices including from the academia, media industry, journalism and communications experts, diplomats and private sector actors to discuss the topic: "Journalists Neutrality and Political Engagement."
“This occasion holds special significance as we reflect upon the vital importance of freedom of expression in shaping a future grounded in human rights,” said EU Deputy Head of Delegation, Guillaume Chartrain as he opened the debate, adding. “As we navigate a world filled with challenges, we recognize that the preservation of free, independent, and pluralistic media is essential for building resilient and healthy democracies.” He also noted, however, that press freedom is under threat in many parts of the world today, stating journalists, media workers, and those who courageously provide independent, quality information face discredit, threats and attacks, including the spread of disinformation.

To amplify the debate, a keynote address was delivered by renowned Ugandan political journalist, Andrew Mwenda, founder and owner of The Independent, a current affairs newsmagazine, who stated in his submission that journalists are the products of the societies in which they work. “Journalists in a polarised environment have to hold a set of morals and values that they defend no matter they do,” he said.
