Advancing global health issues with a strong World Health Organization

31.01.2022

The 150th Meeting of the WHO Executive Board took place on 24-29 January 2022. While 55 agenda items were discussed, we coordinated and delivered a record number of 17 statements. The week included discussions on amending the International Health Regulations, the way forward towards a Pandemic Agreement and the nomination of Dr. Tedros for re-election as Director-General.

During the 150th Meeting of the WHO Executive Board, the EU strongly engaged in a wide variety of topics on the agenda with a record number of 17 EU statements.  The EU also co-sponsored three resolutions focussing on health and peace, intellectual property and International Health Regulations.

We advocated for the establishment of an Agreement on Pandemics under the auspices of the WHO and called on all Member States to support WHO to ensure the organization can perform at its best.

In addition to the potential Agreement on Pandemics and the discussion on the amendments of International Health Regulations, we also reviewed important aspects of the situations on the ground. One crucial example are the conditions for health care workers and patients, especially in situations of conflict.

Conflict is a major challenge for delivering healthcare. Therefore, we highly welcome and fully support the Global Health for Peace initiative.

Furthermore, developments of tuberculosis are very concerning. We need a strong Global Strategy to decrease the growing incidence and mortality.

NO MEANS NO! The EU stands united behind the zero tolerance approach against sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment. Prevention is everyone’s responsibility.

Towards the upcoming World Health Assembly in May 2022, we will continue advocating for a Pandemic Agreement under the auspices of the WHO to strengthen our global response to future pandemics.
