Breast Cancer Awareness Month: International Geneva Unites for Pink October

On Friday, 18 October 2024, the EU Delegation to the UN and other international organisations in Geneva invited Ambassadors and representatives of Permanent Missions and UN agencies to gather at the Palais des Nations to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Breast cancer remains the most common cancer worldwide, affecting millions of lives each year. It continues to be the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women globally. Every 14 seconds, a woman somewhere in the world is diagnosed with breast cancer - statistics show that 1 in 8 women will face a breast cancer diagnosis during her lifetime. However, when detected early, breast cancer is highly treatable. Regular clinical check-ups and self-exams are vital tools in catching the disease at its most manageable stages. This underscores the necessity of raising awareness and increasing access to early detection measures.

For the third consecutive year, the EU Delegation organised this meaningful event, bringing together missions and international organisations to show solidarity with patients and families affected, and to raise awareness about this critical global health issue. With more than 100 participants, the event highlighted the importance of prevention, early detection, and global engagement in the fight against breast cancer. Events like this serve as a platform to emphasise the life-saving potential of education and prevention, contributing to a future where breast cancer is detected early, treated effectively, and ultimately eradicated.

We thank everyone who joined us in standing united against breast cancer. Together, we continue to raise awareness and promote solidarity for this important cause during Pink October.
