Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on Adequate Housing

6 March 2025

EU Statement

Mr Vice/President,

The European Union thanks the Special Rapporteur for his work and takes note of his report on the effects of housing crises on migrant communities.

Access to adequate and affordable housing should be a reality for all human beings. And yet, in our own region alone, rental prices have increased by an average of 18% between 2010 and 2022, while the cost of buying a home has risen by almost half.

The EU has set out to support its members in fighting this trend at its root causes. For example, the “Affordable Housing Initiative” intends to at least double renovation rates in the EU by 2030. To ensure that such efforts benefit all without discrimination, the “Action plan on integration and inclusion 2021-2027” combines ongoing efforts for example by the Asylum and Migration Fund, with local and regional best practices to fight discrimination on the housing market.

Mr. Special Rapporteur,

What best practices can you share on how support to increase availability of housing can be combined with non-discrimination efforts to make adequate and affordable housing a reality for everyone?
