EID on HC report and oral update of the SR on the situation of human rights in Myanmar

EU statement

The EU welcomes the High Commissioner’s report and thanks the speakers.

The EU reiterates its deep concern over the deteriorating human rights situation in Myanmar. The Myanmar military bears the overwhelming responsibility for the ongoing crisis , including for acts that, as previously reported by the High Commissioner, stand not only as gross violations of human rights, but may also constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity. Not even the March earthquake made it stop its aerial attacks.

The EU calls for the end of all violence against civilians by the military and the release of all individuals arbitrarily detained, particularly in the aftermath of the 2021 coup.

For years, the people of Myanmar have courageously defied the military’s authoritarianism and violence. Their investment and commitment to a bottom-up form of governance, as reported, provide hope in the face of immense adversity.

The EU calls for stability, peaceful reconciliation, and for the swift establishment of a transparent, inclusive and credible democratic process, including through dialogue between all stakeholders. We reaffirm our support for the United Nations’ and ASEAN’s efforts in this regard, including the full and effective implementation of the Five Points Consensus. We urge for justice, accountability, and the full implementation of UNSC resolution 2669.

The EU also calls for the de-escalation of violence, and the protection of civilians and the reversal of their rising militarisation, including Rohingya in Rakhine and refugee camps.

We ask the panellists: could you elaborate on bottom-up forms of governance by the people of Myanmar?
