UNITED NATIONS HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL
59th session
Interactive Dialogue with Special Advisor on the Prevention of Genocide
23 June 2025
EU statement
Mr. President,
The crime of genocide is one of the most horrific crimes known to humanity, and for that reason the international community as a whole should not spare any efforts to eliminate its perpetration, by means of closer cooperation, effective prevention and punishment.
The European Union remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting people globally from atrocities. We will continue advancing our efforts to end impunity, ensuring justice for the victims and survivors and holding perpetrators accountable. Genocide and other crimes under international law must not go unpunished.
In our joint fight against impunity for the crime of genocide we reaffirm our unwavering support for the international justice and international criminal justice systems, such as the International Criminal Court. We stress that national justice systems are also of key importance in this fight. Accountability processes allow nations and societies to heal and remain peaceful and stable.
Dear Madam Special Advisor,
Social media had initially been praised as a tool that could revolutionize advocacy by uniting people worldwide and shedding light on human rights abuses. However, they have also been used to spread disinformation and hate speech that could fuel atrocity crimes, including genocide. What are the most effective ways to use social media as a tool to prevent genocide?
I thank you.
