EU Statement - HRC60 - Enhanced Interactive dialogue on report of High Commissioner and Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar
UNITED NATIONS HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL
60th session
Enhanced Interactive dialogue on report of High Commissioner and Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar
8 September 2025
EU statement
The EU thanks the panellists and welcomes the High Commissioner’s and the IIMM’s reports and updates.
The assessment in the OHCHR report that some of the violations and abuses suffered in northern Rakhine by the Rohingya is “reminiscent of the 2017 atrocities” is a cause for particular alarm.
Widespread and systematic patterns of indiscriminate attacks by the military on civilians persist, enabled by arms transfers. So do grave human rights violations and abuses, committed by the Myanmar military and other actors.
The continued work of the IIMM in collecting evidence and identifying perpetrators of these crimes is indispensable for ensuring accountability.
We call for the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners, including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi.
The EU reiterates its call for unhindered humanitarian access, stability, peaceful reconciliation, and for the swift establishment of a transparent, inclusive and credible democratic process, including through dialogue among all stakeholders. We reaffirm our support for the United Nations’ and ASEAN’s efforts in this regard, including the full and effective implementation of the Five Points Consensus. We also urge for justice, accountability, and the full implementation of UNSC resolution 2669.
We would like to ask the panellists:
What is your assessment of the Myanmar military’s and its allies’ plans to organize elections in December 2025 and January 2026?
