From the EU TraineeTalks-series: EU Special Envoy Stephan Klement

The trainees of the European Union Delegation to the United Nations hosted a new edition of the EU TraineeTalks, a series – designed by EU trainees for Team-Europe trainees – to foster discussion on key issues shaping today’s multilateral landscape.

For this session we welcomed EU Ambassador Stephan Klement, the EU Special Envoy for Non-Proliferation and Disarmament, for an engaging exchange on one of the most significant diplomatic achievements of recent decades: the negotiations leading to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), known as the Iran nuclear deal.

Against the backdrop of renewed international attention towards nuclear proliferation and increased rearmament throughout the global security-landscape, Ambassador Klement shared insights into the complex diplomatic process that led to the agreement, highlighting the role of sustained dialogue, multilateral cooperation, and trust in addressing some of the world's most challenging security issues. He also reflected on the lessons learned from the negotiations and the challenges non-proliferation and potential nuclear talks are faced with today.

The discussion provided trainees from the various EU Permanent Missions aka ‘Team-Europe’ with a unique opportunity to engage directly with a senior EU diplomat and to deepen their understanding of the European Union’s role in promoting international peace and security, while exchanging views on the current state and the future of arms control, the importance of diplomacy in times of geopolitical tension, and the continued relevance of multilateral solutions to global challenges.

Our EU TraineeTalks provide trainees with an open platform for dialogue, and direct engagement with many different experts and practitioners working at the forefront of multilateralism. So stay tuned for our next TraineeTalk of our #InternConnected-series – for all trainees of international Geneva – titled “Negotiating Humanity: Reaching People in the Hands of Armed Groups” on 23 June!
