Every year, on 9 May, Europe Day is held, marking the anniversary of the 'Schuman declaration', which took place on the same date, in 1950. It was a turning point towards a new form of political cooperation in Europe, fostering peace between Europe's nations. The Schuman Declaration laid the foundations to the political and economic union, which we know today as the European Union.

Ahead of this special date, on 4 May, the European Union in Geneva, together with the Permanent Representation of Sweden to the UN Geneva, on the occasion of the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2023, invited to a Europe Day celebration at Geneva’s iconic Bâtiment des Forces Motrices. European Member States showcased their national and regional culinary specialities, alongside a jazz concert with Swedish singer Amanda Ginsburg.

As the EU, we will keep on defending the idea of multilateralism. The EU is a multilateralist by nature, it’s in our DNA. It is our deepest conviction that we need agreed rules, that we need to ensure there is global cooperation even among states with different ideological beliefs. We need to cooperate in spite of our differences.

Ambassador Lotte Knudsen, EU Delegation to the UN in Geneva

The EU is only as strong as its member states, and their diversity is what makes the European project unique and successful. Together, we form a union that is much greater than the sum of its parts.

On Europe Day 2023, we think of of the importance of peace. As Russia's aggression against Ukraine continues, we stand shoulder to shoulder with Ukrainians and remember the “solidarity born out of the lessons of the great conflicts of the 20th century” in President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen’s words. Furthermore, as High Representative Josep Borrell, European External Action Service put it: “The Schuman Declaration was about more than just building peace among Europeans. It was also about making Europe a driving force for peace in the world.”
