EVENT: HRC 49 - Russia's attack on Ukraine and its Human Rights consequences
After weeks of Russia-instigated escalation and threats, on 24 February, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation launched an unprovoked and unjustified attack on Ukraine. The human cost of the Russian aggression continues to rise daily, causing a growing number of civilian casualties, interrupting livelihoods, and damaging critical civilian infrastructure. As of morning 28 February, according to Ukraine’s Ministry of Health, 352 people, including 16 children, were killed, and around 1700 people, including at least 116 children, were wounded. At least 368,000 people have already crossed into neighbouring countries, fleeing the ongoing hostilities, according to the UNHCR as of 27 February. Russian aggression threatens to trigger a humanitarian catastrophe in Ukraine and neighbouring countries. The ministerial side event will provide a venue to discuss the current situation in the context of human rights and the efforts to bring the perpetrators of the international law to account.
