HRC 48 - Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance - EU Intervention
Madam Special Rapporteur,
The EU thanks you for your latest reports.
The EU wishes to reaffirm its strong commitment to prevent and fight racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related forms of intolerance whenever and wherever it occurs. The recent publication of the first ever EU Anti-Racism Action Plan is a testament to that commitment.
The EU is deeply concerned with the rising of hate speech, including online, and the use of digital tools for incitement to hatred and violence. We have been working to prevent such incidents related to direct and indirect discrimination, in order to punish perpetrators, as well as to ensure justice, protection and support to victims. Additionally, we are working closely with online platforms and information service providers on these matters.
Madam Special Rapporteur,
The European Union is fully committed to respecting its obligations under international law and the human rights of all migrants. Allegations of mistreatment are taken very seriously and are properly investigated by the relevant authorities.
We regret that the report fails to acknowledge the extraordinary efforts made by our governments. Amidst a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic, we continued to uphold our responsibilities and ensure the wellbeing of thousands of migrants and refugees reaching European borders or being rescued at sea, while providing unmatched levels of assistance to migrants abroad as well as to countries of origin and transit.
Over the past years, the EU has developed a comprehensive and balanced policy framework on migration, which we are committed to further develop. Our ultimate aim remains to ensure protection for the human rights of migrants, addressing root causes, avoiding loss of life, and providing international protection to all those who need it.
Thank you.
