UNITED NATIONS HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL

Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on Sale of Children

8 March 2023

EU Intervention

The EU thanks the Special Rapporteur for her update to this Council, and for her report. We express our continued strong support to the mandate.

The promotion of child-friendly justice is a key pillar of the EU’s strategy on the rights of the child, which seeks to ensure that judicial systems in Europe are adapted to the specific needs of children and respect their rights.

The EU continuously seeks to strengthen its policies and actions in the field of combatting the sale and sexual abuse of children, both online and offline. Integrated child protection systems where all relevant services cooperate according to a coordinated and multidisciplinary approach, in the best interests of the child, for example the Barnahus or any other equivalent children rights friendly model, are the best tools to ensure prevention, protection and remedy for child victims”.

The EU’s strategy for a more effective fight against child sexual abuse sets out a comprehensive response. Guided by the best interests of the child, we are putting forward enhanced measures to reinforce support and assistance to victims, while significantly strengthening prevention, investigation, and detection of child abuse material.

The EU remains committed to a victim-centered approach to combatting sale and sexual abuse of children, and will continue taking action to this end.

Thank you!
