Enhanced ID with the FFM on Sudan

10 September 2024

EU Statement

Mr Vice/President, Honoured Members of the Fact Finding Mission,

We thank you for your very important report; despite the difficulties you have faced in operationalising the mission, the scope and clarity of your findings are impressive. Your mission is a cornerstone for accountability.

We remain appalled by the grave human rights violations and atrocity crimes committed  since the outbreak of fighting between SAF, RSF, and allied armed groups, including ethnically targeted killings, arbitrary detentions, torture, recruitment of children and sexual and gender-based violence. Famine has been confirmed for the first time in the world in seven years.

The warring parties have led the country to the brink of collapse; millions of lives have been destroyed. We urge careful consideration of the FFM report’s findings and recommendations on the urgent need for civilian protection and measures to address impunity. Perpetrators must be held accountable and brought to justice. We strongly call on all to respect the arms embargo and refrain from arms deliveries.

We welcome efforts to facilitate a durable peace solution for the country, most recently in Geneva, resulting in the opening of the border-crossing in Adre, hoping it can be fully operational as soon as possible. We also call on all stakeholders to honour the pledges and commitments made during the Paris International Humanitarian Conference on Sudan and its neighbours and call for urgently improved, rapid and unimpeded humanitarian access and protection for humanitarian workers in accordance with International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights Law.

Honoured Members of the Fact Finding Mission,

How can we further support your work towards ending the culture of impunity in Sudan?
