HRC52 Side Event - Ukraine : Accountability for war crimes and serious human rights violations

21.03.2023

Following the presentation of the report by the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine, at the 52nd session of the Human Rights Council, this side event, hosted by Human Rights House Foundation, will follow the interactive dialogue with the COI during the session. It will be an opportunity for various actors of the accountability process to provide an assessment of the situation in Ukraine and consider options for furthering accountability.

Based on its investigations of the events in Kyiv, Chernihiv, Kharkiv, and Sumy regions, the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine has previously reported reasonable grounds to conclude that an array of war crimes, violations of human rights and international humanitarian law have been committed in Ukraine. It has argued that “there is an undeniable need for accountability”.

At the 52nd session, the COI will present a new report to the Council. This side event will follow the interactive
dialogue with the COI during the session and allows an opportunity for various actors focused on aspects of the
accountability process to provide an assessment of the situation in Ukraine and consider options for furthering
accountability.
