On 26 February 2024, Ukraine will mark a decade of unwavering resistance to the Russian Federation’s aggression and occupation of its territory, including of the Autonomous Republic of Crimeа.

Over the past ten years, Ukraine has faced a major assault on its sovereignty, and the freedoms and human rights of its people. On 24 February 2022, Russia’s full-scale invasion aiming to undermine the very existence of an independent and democratic Ukraine began, representing a flagrant violation of the UN Charter.

The violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law, war crimes, and crimes against humanity carried out by Russia’s forces continue unabated, lead to more suffering and hardship of millions in Ukraine.  Continued evidence of atrocities in Ukraine is being documented by national and international investigative mechanisms to ensure accountability for perpetrators and justice for victims.

The international community must remain steadfast in its efforts to oppose the aggression and to overcome its consequences felt throughout the world. Ukraine's tireless defense, supported by the international community, is nothing less than a battle for human rights, dignity, freedom, and the rule of law, principles that extend beyond its borders and embody the core values of humanity.

On 26 February, during the high-level segment of the 55th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Ukraine and its partners will convene foreign ministers and other senior officials to honour Ukraine's decade-long resistance to aggression and occupation and affirm support to international efforts aimed at achieving a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in Ukraine based on the principles of the UN Charter.
