Promoting inclusiveness in and through sports

EU Statement

Thank you, Mr. President.

Europe is the beating heart of sport this summer, with the organization of the European Football Cup in Germany and the Olympic and Paralympic Games in France. Sport, a universal language, transcends social, cultural, and national boundaries. It is particularly powerful in promoting the integration of all persons, regardless of their background or abilities.

Sport offers an invaluable opportunity for individuals with disabilities to participate fully in society. Major sporting events like the Paralympic Games have showcased their talents and challenged stereotypes. Persons with various backgrounds, including migrants and refugees, also find in sport a bridge to integration, interacting with host communities, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual understanding.

However, the potential of sport to promote inclusiveness is not always fully realized. Persons in situations of vulnerability or marginalization remain underrepresented in professional sports, volunteer roles, and governing bodies. Gender inequality persists in earnings, funding, media coverage, and access to training facilities.

The EU constantly strives to ensure equal opportunities and support initiatives that fight discrimination and foster inclusivity in sport. Utilizing EU funding programs like Erasmus+, the European Social Funds, and the European Regional Development Funds, we can enhance accessibility and training, ensuring sports are inclusive for all.

Sport has the power to build inclusive, strong communities and promote values of tolerance, solidarity, and equality.

Thank you.
