Interactive dialogue on the oral update of the High Commissioner on Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar

27 February 2026

EU Statement

The EU thanks you, High Commissioner, for your oral update.

The EU condemns all violence against civilians in Myanmar, including attacks against the Rohingya community. We call for the release of all arbitrarily detained persons, notably those detained as a consequence of the 2021 military coup.

The EU rejects any elections that are neither free nor fair, and that aim to legitimise the military without meeting the requirements of a democratic process.

We demand the swift establishment of a transparent, inclusive and credible democratic path, and in this regard will continue to support the United Nations’ and ASEAN’s efforts.

The rising militarisation of civilians, including Rohingya in Rakhine and refugee camps, is of grave concern.

The EU calls for complete, safe and unhindered humanitarian access to all people in need, including through cross-line and cross-border channels, and for the de-escalation of violence.

High Commissioner,

Justice and accountability for all human rights violations and abuses are crucial for stability and peaceful reconciliation.

We continue to support UN mechanisms, including the Special Rapporteur, the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, and the IIMM, as well as procedures before international courts or using universal jurisdiction.

High Commissioner,

Have you identified opportunities to facilitate de-escalation of violence among stakeholders in Myanmar?
