Mr President,
I have the honour to speak on behalf of the European Union. We thank the High Commissioner and the panelists for sharing their insights and good practices.
Fifteen years after its adoption, United Nations Declaration on Human Rights Education and Training remains a vital framework for bringing universal rights into everyday life. We welcome progress in translating its commitments into concrete action in classrooms, communities and beyond.
Human rights education enables people to understand and exercise their rights, respect those of others and participate meaningfully in society. Building on this progress requires continued political will, sustained investment in education, inclusive learning and strong partnerships.
The EU fully supports the World Programme for Human Rights Education, including its ongoing Fifth phase, focused on children and youth. By addressing some of today’s most pressing challenges, it connects human rights education to their everyday lives, making their voices and experiences essential to its effective implementation.
The EU also welcomes the synergies between the Declaration, the World Programme and the Global Alliance for Human Rights’ “Rights in every classroom” initiative.
