3rd EU statement

Chair,

I have the honour to speak on behalf of the European Union and its Member States.

The Candidate Countries Albania*, the Republic of North Macedonia*, Montenegro*, the EFTA countries Iceland, Norway, members of the European Economic Area, align themselves with this statement.

  1. We are commenting on the proposal for Programme and Budget which will be submitted to the 111th ILC for approval.

  1. Through you, we would like to thank the Office for the information provided throughout this Governing Body.

  1. The Office has communicated useful information on the Global Coalition for Social Justice. It gave us a better understanding of the objectives and governance of this initiative.

  1. We also thank the Office for its explanation of the RBSA.

  1. As far as the priority action programmes are concerned, we hope that they will soon be presented to the Governing Body so that the constituents can give their guidance.

  1. The EU and its Member States reaffirm that they will continue to strongly oppose and step-up action to combat all forms of discrimination, with a specific attention to multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination, including on grounds of sex, race, ethnic or social origin, religion or belief, political or any other opinion, disability, age, sexual orientation and gender identity.

  1. The EU wishes to restate its commitment to equality and non-discrimination and to the entitlement of all persons, to enjoy the full range of human rights and fundamental freedoms, and to the participation of, inter alia, youth, girls and women, persons with disabilities and LGBTI persons, as well as to the protection of those who are in disadvantaged, vulnerable and marginalised situations, including children.

  1. We also reiterate our position that we strongly oppose the amendment put forward by Pakistan on behalf of the OIC countries, except Albania, and also the amendment submitted by Saudi Arabia joined by Pakistan.

  1. On behalf of the European Union and its Member States, we intend to engage constructively in the forthcoming discussions.

  1. With this we support the original decision point as revised by the Office.

Thank you, Chair.
