Team Europe TraineeTalk: Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights

The EU Delegation in Geneva held a special Human Rights Day edition of its TeamEurope TraineeTalk series, this time focusing on the rapidly evolving relationship between artificial intelligence and human rights. The session took place at the DiploFoundation and brought together trainees from EU and Member State missions, as well as young professionals from across International Geneva.

The discussion was opened by Ambassador Michele Cervone d’Urso, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to the UN in Geneva, who underlined the importance of understanding both the opportunities and the risks that artificial intelligence presents for global governance and the protection of human rights.

This edition of TraineeTalk featured Dr. Jovan Kurbalija, Executive Director of DiploFoundation and a leading expert in digital governance. The session was moderated by Anton Sauder, Economic Trainee at the EU Delegation in Geneva.

Dr. Kurbalija guided participants through the ways artificial intelligence has influenced the human experience and what role international Geneva could play in its regulation. The conversation was highly interactive. Trainees asked questions about regulation, algorithmic bias and the way AI could influence geopolitical dynamics.

A highlight of the session was Dr. Kurbalija’s practical demonstration showing how anyone can build a simple chatbot using openly available tools on DiploFoundation’s website. The live demonstration gave trainees a concrete look at how emerging technologies function in practice.

The TraineeTalk series is part of the EU Delegation’s outreach programme to strengthen connections across Team Europe and to give young professionals insight into the EU’s work in multilateral diplomacy. This Human Rights Day edition highlighted how essential it is for future diplomats to understand the human rights implications of new technologies and how dialogue and cooperation can help ensure that artificial intelligence is developed responsibly and transparently.
