A Critical Year for Solar Energy

A rapid deployment of renewable energy, including solar energy, is vital for reaching the world’s temperature target. In the run-up to COP27, we want to take stock of recent developments in the sector and discuss how the UN NY system can support a quicker rollout of this clean energy form. India is a leader on solar energy – through the International Solar Alliance launched 2015 together with France and other partners, and through strong domestic action and targets on renewable energy.

The European Commission has on 18 May 2022 presented a new EU Solar Strategy to double solar photovoltaic capacity by 2025 and install 600GW by 2030. SIDS are frontrunners on solar energy, with 12 SIDS targeting more than 80% renewable energy in the power sector.
