20 November 2025, New York – European Union Explanation of Vote at the 80th Session of the UN General Assembly Action on A/C.3/80/L.12/Rev.1 - Implementation of the outcome of the World Summit for Social Development and of the Twenty-fourth session of the General Assembly

Chair,

I have the honour to speak on behalf of the European Union and its Member States.

The resolution on “the implementation of the outcome of the World Summit for Social Development and of the Twenty-fourth session of the General Assembly” has traditionally been adopted by consensus by the Third Committee and the negotiations this year have again been conducted with that goal in mind.

Achieving consensus requires compromise, and we recognize that no delegation can expect to see all its priorities fully reflected in the text. We regret that the negotiation process was not conducted in a manner that ensured inclusivity and efficiency. However we have worked in good faith to find common ground on the important issues that we deliberate in this Committee, in order to reach an outcome that is acceptable to all delegations.

The EU recognizes the relevance of the topic of this resolution especially in light of the outcomes of the “World Social Summit” under the title “the Second World Summit for Social Development” held in Qatar, from 4 to 6 November 2025, and in particular the Doha Platform for Social solutions, which we welcome.  The Member States of the European Union therefore voted YES on this resolution.

Thank you.
