EU Explanation of Vote – UN General Assembly: Resolution on Agriculture development, food security and nutrition
Chair,
I deliver these remarks on behalf of the European Union and its Member States.
The Candidate Countries Montenegro*, Albania*, Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina* as well as Monaco and San Marino align themselves with this statement
I extend my gratitude to the Facilitators Ms Lisa Segovia of France and Mr Rodrigo Cruvinel Barenho of Brazil, for their efforts in achieving consensus on this important topic.
The EU regrets that vote was called on this resolution, much of which is based on years of precedence and agreed language, politicizing unnecessarily during a time in which consensus, compromise and cooperation are so desperately needed in multilateralism. The EU and its Member States support the extension of this UN Decade of Action on Nutrition in line with the 2030 Agenda, and fully support the draft tabled by the facilitators. We voted in favor of the resolution.
In a decade marked by persistent challenges to food security and nutrition, exacerbated by conflicts, climate change, a global pandemic, and financial upheavals, the backsliding of progress towards SDG 2 is deeply concerning. The fact that we were unable achieve consensus on this resolution underscores how geopolitical concerns are taking precedence over feeding the most vulnerable.
During the negotiations, the EU called for the strengthening of language on the disproportionate impact of food insecurity on women and girls, highlighting the link between conflict and hunger, and maintaining key references to the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals. We regret that a number of delegations opposed these constructive proposals.
In broader terms, the EU and its Member States stand unwaveringly committed to accelerating global action on food security and nutrition. You can rely on our steadfast support and partnership in promoting sustainable agriculture, ensuring food security, and advancing nutrition, with the overarching goal of leaving no one behind.
I thank you.
