EU leaders advance multilateralism, energy transition and humanitarian action at UNGA
Yesterday, President Ursula von der Leyen, together with President of the European Council António Costa, met Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to take stock of the progress made in the EU-Australia partnership since the Summit earlier this year. High Representative/Vice-President Kaja Kallas and Commissioner Hadja Lahbib delivered opening remarks at the Ministerial-Level Side Event on ‘Humanitarian Diplomacy that Safeguards International Humanitarian Law’. Today, President von der Leyen, President António Costa, and High Representative/Vice-President Kallas will take part in the opening of the General Assembly General Debate. Executive Vice-President Teresa Ribera and Commissioner Woepke Hoekstra will participate in the COP31-IEA-UN High-Level Energy Transitions Solutions Dialogue.
High Representative/Vice-President Kallas will co-host the High-Level Side Event on ‘Global Food Security and the Black Sea’, together with Foreign Ministers of France, Romania and Ukraine. In the afternoon, HR/VP Kallas and Commissioner Dubravka Šuica will participate in the event ‘The Road Ahead: One Year after the New York Declaration High-Level International Meeting on the Two-State Solution and the Comprehensive Peace Plan for Gaza’, co-hosted by France, Canada and UK.
In the morning, Commissioner Šuica will co-host the event 'Strengthening information integrity and freedom of expression in the Mediterranean: An EU-UNESCO partnership' with UNESCO Assistant Director-General, Mariya Gabriel.
In the morning, Commissioner Síkela will participate in the World Economic Forum private roundtable ‘Powering Growth in the New Economy’. In the evening, Commissioner Síkela will be speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative/InterEnergy dinner. He will also hold a bilateral meeting with the UNDP Administrator, Alexander de Croo. On that occasion, they will announce a €50 million European Fund for Sustainable Development Plus (EFSD+) Guarantee Facility for Sustainable Cities with UN Capital Development Fund.
In the morning, Commissioner Lahbib will deliver opening remarks during the high-level breakfast on 'Drones, Modern Warfare and the Protection of IHL in Eastern DRC' . In the afternoon, she will speak at a Ministerial roundtable on the protection of civilians and at the Ministerial Humanitarian Law meeting of the OCHA Donor Support Group Troika.
Commissioner Hoekstra will speak at the America Is All In's Local to Global Exchange Summit, where he will take part in a fireside chat. In the afternoon, he will participate in an event organised by the Sequoia Climate Foundation and the Clean Technology Partnership Initiative together with Canadian Minister of Industry, Mélanie Joly.
Commissioner Costas Kadis will participate in the High-Level Political Dialogue on Renewing Environmental Multilateralism, organised by Panama and the Republic of Vanuatu.
