ICCROM - International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property – Rome, Italy

Today, during the 34th session of the General Assembly of ICCROM in Rome, Ambassador Martin Selmayr discussed with the Ministers of Culture from Guatemala, Pakistan and the Dominican Republic, the Ambassador of Kenya and senior officials from Latvia and Azerbaijan, the Culture-Climate nexus - the impact that climate change has on our culture heritage and why we need to integrate this aspect better in the international efforts on climate mitigation and adaptation COP31.

On behalf of the European Union, Ambassador Martin Selmayr mentioned that the EU Strategy on Adaptation to Climate Change highlights the need to protect and preserve cultural heritage in the face of climate change. He also referred to the New European Bauhaus initiative that seeks to combine sustainability and beauty in designing, building and renovating public buildings in Europe. It was great to see the energetic ICCROM Director General Aruna Gujral putting this important subject on the agenda of the work of ICCROM!
