Ambassador Martin Selmayr at WFP on the Sudan crises
A terrible war has made Sudan the epicentre of suffering in the world (Tom Fletcher UN Relief Chief). More than 30 million people (more than 60% of the Sudanese population), including 16 million children, as well as 9 million in Darfur, urgently need humanitarian assistance as they face malnutrition, famine and escalating violence. Sudan is also facing the largest displacement crisis in the world, with 12 million people displaced internally or externally. This war has also been one of the deadliest for humanitarian aid workers, with more than 120 killed since the war began in April 2023.
Today at WFP‘s Executive Board, the EU, France and Germany drew attention to the Sudan crisis and called on the international community to provide more funding and to use all foreign policy instruments to bring the parties of this brutal conflict to the negotiation table. We urgently need a humanitarian pause in Sudan and safe access for WFP and other humanitarian aid organisations.
The EU and its 27 Member States made close to 700 million EUR available for the humanitarian response in Sudan and neighbouring countries from 2023 to 2025.
