Archbishop Paul Gallagher celebrates EUDEL Mass - 55th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between the EU and the Holy See
On the Campidoglio in Rome, the Treaties of Rome, the EU‘s Founding Charter, were signed in 1957. This is why the Holy See dedicated the Basilica of Santa Maria in Ara Coeli on the Capitol Hill to the European Union in the Iter Europaeum, the pilgrims path for the Holy Year in Rome iubilaeum2025.va/en/pellegrinag
It was a great honour and privilege that the Holy See's Secretary for Relations with States, Archbishop Paul Gallagher, celebrated yesterday evening a Mass in Ara Coeli on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between the EU and the Holy See.
EU Ambassador Martin Selmayr welcomed the large presence of the diplomatic corps in Rome and thanked the Ambassadors from all continents for joining our Mass yesterday to celebrate multilateralism and call for a just and lasting peace, ending the many wars, conflicts and injustices in the world. Ambassador Selmayr was particularly grateful to his colleagues from the EU Member States who played an active part in this Mass by delivering readings and prayers in their mother tongue.
At the centre of our reflections and prayers in Ara Coeli in Rome were of course the people of Ukraine. On behalf of the European Union, Ambassador Martin Selmayr reiterated our call for a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine and for enhanced solidarity with and stronger support for Ukraine. Ambassador Selmayr was very grateful that the Ambassador of Ukraine, Andrii Yurash took the time to join our Mass on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between the EU and the Holy See. We will StandWithUkraine as long as it takes.
