The conclave chooses Pope Leo XIV – 8 May 2025
The President of the European Council, António Costa, congratulated the new Pope Leo XIV, saying that “in time of division and uncertainty, his spiritual leadership can help inspire unity, compassion and peace”. Also the President of the European Commission Ursula con der Leyen sent her congratulations to Pope Leo XIV and said “she wished the pontificate to be guided by wisdom and strength, as he leads the Catholic community and inspires the world through his commitment to peace and dialogue”.

The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, welcomed Pope Leo XIV by saying “May your leadership of the Catholic Church be a beacon of hope to all the faithful. And that your wisdom and strength continue to inspire the world as we work towards building bridges, unity and peace.”
HR/VP Kaja Kallas congratulated Pope Leo XIV with the following words: “Your unique role in global diplomacy will be essential to foster dialogue, understanding among nations and cultures, and just and lasting peace.” Commissioner Magnus Brunner also congratulated Pop Leo XIV for his election and said that he was “deeply impressed and encouraged by your dedication in promoting tolerance, peace, and reconciliation in an increasingly divided world”.
